December 3, 2007 - Whitby Ringette Association ("WRA") announced today that they have been successful in receiving a Grant from The Ontario Trillium Foundation.  This Grant will allow the WRA to purchase equipment and increase advertising, which will help to involve more youth in the sport of ringette and benefit from healthy physical activity.

The sport of Ringette was developed in 1963 inNorth Bay, Ontario, by the late Mr. Sam Jacks. Originally designed to be a unique winter team sport for girls, Ringette has evolved into a fast paced, exciting sport that combines the speed of hockey with the strategy of basketball. In the game players use a straight stick to pass, carry, and shoot a rubber ring to score goals.

The WRA was started in 1970 by the local Parks and Recreation Department.  There are various levels of play across the province; bunny, C, B, A, and AA; and Whitby offers all these levels.

Across Canada, Ringette is played by all the provinces and its membership is well over 50,000.

Whitby is proud to be hosting the 2008 AA Provincials, where over 1,500 players and their families are expected to attend on February 28 - March 2, 2008

A ceremony to announce this Grant to our community and members will be held on December 11, 2007 at 7:10pm followed by a Junior A Ringette game between Whitby and Richmond Hill at 7:45pm at the Iroquois Park Sports Complex, pad 3.
